how can you Track your Visitors from Google Product Searches

Tracking Your Performance

You can track your traffic from Google Product Search by adding tracking information to your URLs. The easiest way to do this is to add the parameter source=googleps to the end of your URLs. Additionally, you can track traffic within Google Merchant Center by using the reporting features.

To set up external traffic tracking apart from reporting in Google Merchant Center:

  • If you don't already use parameters and your URL looks like http://www.example.com/item.html, your transformed URL will look like this: http://www.example.com/product.html?source=googleps
  • If your URLs already have parameters in them and look like http://www.example.com/product.html?q=exampleitem, with a question mark already included, your transformed URL will look like this: http://www.example.com/search.cgi?q=exampleproduct&source=googleps

Your web server should already support this formatting without any special changes. Once you've added source=googleps to the URLs, you'll be able to look for source=googleps in your web server logs. If everything works properly, this string will appear each time a user clicks through to one of your items.

Note: After creating your tracking URLs, please test them in a web browser before including them in your data feed to verify they link properly to the specified pages.

Google Sitemaps Toolbox - Why use Sitemap

Google Sitemaps Toolbox

Google has recently release in beta Google Sitemaps, a way to inform Google robots about your web site. To use Google Sitemaps, you must create some XML files with all your URLs and download them into Google Sitemaps web site. But, it's not easy to create and maintain such a file manually. Google Sitemaps Toolbox is a toolbox dedicated to webmasters that want to create, view, publish, control, manage and debug Google Sitemaps. The first tool of Google Sitemaps Toolbox is Google Sitemaps Stylesheets (GSS), an XSL stylesheet to view Google sitemaps files in a user-friendly way.

Google Sitemaps Stylesheet

Normally Google Sitemaps are pure maschine-readable xml text - but not very human friendly. When using Google sitemaps stylesheets this is now also human-friendly. Participating in this is very easy, there is just one line that has to be added at each Google sitemaps file and a file that has to be stored somewhere on your website. That's it.

This page describes what you have to do to use it and what you can you once it's installed.

The initial version has been developed by Baccou Bonneville, updates have been by Johannes Müller and Tobias Kluge. This project is now available on sourceforge.net.
Installation of Google Sitemaps Stylesheet

To view the Google Sitemaps files human-friendly (and not only computer-friendly) you just have to download the xslt (a file that describes how the browser should display the content of the Google sitemaps files) and copy it somewhere on your website.

Then you have to add one line into the sitemaps file.

directly under

In this case the gss.xsl file has been copied into the same directory where the Google sitemaps files are stored. If this is not the case you have to modify the value after href=" - you could easily add the absolute url of the gss.xsl file on your website. But for security reasons many browsers have the restriction that these have to be stored under the same domain as the Google sitemaps files are stored.
Usage of Google Sitemaps Stylesheet

Google Sitemaps Index files

If you're looking into a sitemaps index file you'll see the sitemaps files and the last modification date of each file - you can sort the list and when clicking on a sitemaps file this file is opened in the browser. You can have a demo of a sitemap index file (from Baccou Bonneville web site) by clicking here.

Google Sitemaps files

You can sort the entries of the sitemaps file depending on filename, last modification date, priority or change frequency. You can have a look at a sitemaps index file used by enarion.net here.

How to Index website in 24 Hours

Step 1
- Produce Initial Content / Launch the Site - 1 - N hours

Obviously, your website has to have some content. I usually post at least 5 pages (or articles) before the launch, but less will probably work as well. It's important, however, that your content is well optimized and keyword rich already in the beginning, as it could take you weeks if not months to get your SERPs updated after getting indexed the first time.

Step 2
- Sign Up to Google Webmaster Tools - 2 - 10 minutes

We can only speculate whether verifying your site at GWMT helps you get indexed faster or not. However, the whole process takes 5 minutes tops and you'll get a ton of valuable information out of this later on so doing this is a very good idea even if it doesn't directly affect the indexing time.

Step 3
- Generate an XML Sitemap - 3 - 20 minutes

This is a very important step. Make sure that you generate an XML sitemap for each and every new site you build. If you use WP then I suggest you download the XML Sitemap Generator plugin. Not only does it automatically generate your pagemap and update it every time you make changes on your site, it autosubmits it to Google, Bing, Ask and Yahoo making their crawlers visit your site almost instantly after each change. If you decide to go with manual sitemap building then bear in mind that you need to go back to Step 2 and submit your sitemap.

Step 4
- Publish a Press Release - 3 - 4 hours

This step not only helps you get indexed fast, but also brings you publicity and some valuable backlinks. I personally consider Press Releases one of the most beneficial marketing tools out there.
Needless to say, in order for your press release to be successful, it has to be well-written. If you don't have any past experience writing press releases then I strongly suggest you to go through a good bunch of samples and read about it on the Internet. Googling for "press release writing tips" returns you a whole bunch of sites with great content on how to write and optimize your releases.

IMPORTANT! Put a lot of effort into producing a TRULY GOOD AND NEWSWORTHY press release. If your PR is poorly written then not only does it not get publicity bust most of the times it doesn't even get approved/published.

Once you have your Press Release written and ready to be sent out, it's time to submit it. Nowadays I use mainly paid PR submission services (for better exposure and some good extras such as being able to add more than one link etc.), however, there are many great free submission sites out there. Below is the list of some of the best free PR submission sites I've used in the past for great results:

- Newswire Today - THE best free PR submission site if you ask me. They usually approve new PRs within an hour or two and Google News seems to adore them, publishing PRs distributed by them almost instantly.
- PRLog.com - Press Releases are published instantly (no manual approval) and Google (talking about organic results here, not Google News) seems to index their PRs very fast and rank them rather high, allowing you to get to the #1 page even before your site itself gets indexed.
- 1888PressRelease.com - Getting approved can be rather tough (there are very strict guidelines on PRs and they don't publish in certain categories, such as gambling or adult entertainment), but if you do get approved then you can rest assured that your press release (given that the title is at all attractive) is going to get some public attention.

Some other free sites that I've used at one point or another are free-press-release.com, pressbox.co.uk, prurgent.com and pr-inside.com.

But whichever sites(s) you choose, it's always important to read their guidelines carefully and follow them to the point. If you don't, you can rest assured that your release either won't get published or will get deleted very soon after getting published.

Step 5
- Digg, Stumble and ping all of the below: - 5 - 20 minutes

- Your main page
- ONE of your other pages/articles (don't digg more than one articles at one - you WILL digg them but you'll do it gradually, digging and pinging one per day)
- Your published press release

The first two points here should be pretty straightforward. As for digging and pinging your press release, make sure that you pick one that has your active link in it as some sites allow active links within press releases, others don't. In terms of getting indexed, sending Google to a press release that doesn't include your active link is worthless.

As you noticed, I'm telling you to only use Digg, Stubleupon and a ping service (I personally use Pingler.com). Some claim that you should use as many social bookmarking sites as possible, but quite frankly I haven't found it very helpful. Sure, you'll get some additional backlinks but comparing it with the time you need to spend to go through 20-some bookmarking sites, it's hardly worth it. I have to say though, that lately I have experimented a little with Onlywire (a $2 per month service that automatically posts your sites to around 20 social bookmarking sites) but I'm yet to draw any direct conclusions whether it helps my sites much or not.

Step 6
- Query Your Domain on Whois/Info Sites - 3 to 10 minutes
This is a neat trick I've been using for a while and find it VERY helpful. Basically, you visit around 20 URLs similar to http://www.alexa.com/data/details/?url=yourdomain.com and you're done. The whole thing takes you around 5 minutes but is incredibly beneficial.
For the sake of keeping this article clear, I haven't included the list of those sites in the article, but have uploaded them to http://imaxhd.com/whoissites.txt instead. Simply take the list, replace yourdomain.com with your actual domain name and that's it.

Step 7
- (Optional, for even better results) - Craigslist Posting - 5 - 20 minutes

What I'm telling you to do here is write ANY post on ANY Craigslist category and make sure that it includes an active link to your site. That's it.
Craigslist gets crawled a lot and even though all links are nofollow, Google still follows them and indexes the sites it finds. I have to add, though, that your post has to carry at least SOME true value and it's best if it's related to your site. I also advise you to post on less popular categories, such as arts etc., to avoid your post getting flagged and eventually removed.

Step 8
- Sit back, relax and DON'T hit the "refresh" button once every 10 minutes - 1 to 24 hours

That's it. If you followed those steps, I'm fairly confident that you can go to bed and by the time you wake up in the morning, your site will be indexed. Make sure, though, that you won't start refresing Google every 2 seconds to see if it's already indexed or not. This is completely neutral in terms of getting indexed but very bad for your mental health. What I always tend to do after launching a site is set up as-it-happens Google Alerts (google.com/alerts) with my site's address and the main keywords. This way I get an instant email notification as soon as anything happens on Google regarding my site.
